3 to 3 1/2 StarsThis is my first Lisa Kleypas book and there is not doubt that she is one INCREDIBLE writer. I can encounter why well-nigh of my Goodreads friends love and consider her one of their all-time favorite romance novelists. Unfortunately, this book didn't work for me like I had hoped. While I adored and fell head-over-heels in love with the hero, Alex, I can't say the same for the heroine, Lily. I started the book very much loving her vivacious, witty, and incorrigible behavior; however, by the cease of the story my love affair with her had waned. Her potent and willful nature started grating on my fretfulness, and (view spoiler)[her unwillingness to communicate or confide her heartbreaking undercover to the hero until the final few chapters of the book frustrated me to no terminate (hide spoiler)]. Fortunately, the ending more than fabricated up for all my frustration throughout much of this story. Information technology brought tears to my eyes and joy to my heart.
Even though my commencement gustatory modality of Lisa Kleypas was not quite as satisfying as I had hoped, I was wise to continue giving her a effort. I only finished reading her second book of the series Dreaming of You lot and it was absolutely fantastic! One of my favorites!

There is a huge misunderstanding. Hero is leaving with his righteous anger. Heroine calls out to him and he stops. Heroine explains without turning it into huge ball of omissions. They talk it out and solve the problem. Aaannd romance readers everywhere cries!!!
Finally! This book gets a 5 stars rating just for that scene from me. I really liked the heroine and the hero every bit a cherry on top =)

And I certainly do love the hero, Alex. Fabled book- Kleypas at her all-time. We accept a strong all the same vulnerable heroine, Lily. And nosotros accept a passionate, caring hero who does his utmost to win Lily's trust and support her through everything. An interesting (and emotional) sub-plot as well.
Just a really wonderful romance with a capital letter "R".

I re-read this one, needing a book where I could actually LOVE the hero after plowing through a surfeit of tortured, arse-hole heroes. And I certainly do dear the hero, Alex. If yous are looking for a bastard meets doormat kind of romance, this is not it. If you are looking for a hero who has depth, integrity and award, however, then read this book!

Alex stubbed out his cigar and threw the butt into the fireplace. "My garden doesn't need improvement," he snarled. "It's been the aforementioned way for twenty years!"
She nodded cheerfully. "Precisely my bespeak. I told him that the way of your landscape is sadly outmoded. All the really stylish gardens have several ponds all around them. I showed Mr. Chumley exactly where a new one must exist dug."
A affluent of carmine crept up from Alex's collar to his temples. He wanted to strangle her. "Chumley wouldn't overturn a spoonful of dirt without asking my permission."
Lily shrugged innocently. "He seemed enthusiastic about the notion. I wouldn't be surprised if he'southward already begun digging. Really, I remember you'll admire the changes." She gave him a addicted, sisterly smile. "And whenever yous walk by that dear lilliputian pond, perhaps y'all'll always recollect of me."
Raiford'south features contorted. He made a sound that resembled a roar as he stormed out of the parlor.
Totty, Penelope, and Zachary all stared at Lily.
"I don't recollect he appreciated my thought," she remarked, looking disappointed.
Lily is a brute of wonder and spirit, she can never stay still in i place and treasures her freedom and independence above all else.A male friend of hers that is in love with her sister asks for her help of stealing her Penelope away from Alex.I only love Lily`s mischievous plans on that role, how she unknowingly bewitches Alex with her twisted, tricky, haphazard charm, teases him and laughs at him and the scene when she abducts him and ties him to her bed was HILARIOUS,lol!
Alex Raiford is a hero to die for!I merely respect and love him as a human of noble and potent nature. His undying devotion, loyalty and love for Lily made me swoon, and i just adore his overprotective and jealous side when it comes to Lily!(Ah,but all Kleypas heroes are like that)I also love that he is blonde, and his warm human relationship with his younger brother Henry made me fall for him more as Lily did.Alex knows she is a woman capable of matching his passion, strength, and stubbornness with her own..and i just L.O.V.East how he is afterward her. After the manner Lily turned his whole upside down i knew Alex would be a hero in hot pursuit of her.The scene when he laughs after finding out that he loves Lily, fabricated me laugh with him!I love him..only beloved dearest dear!Ah,he is my babe!!!!!
I have also finally come to run into the mysterious Derek Chicken, the Anti-hero i take heard so much about from my friends. He seems then dark and haunted, and i can`t expect to read his story with Sara in "Dreaming of You". Its the same feeling i had when i fell in love with Logan in "Somewhere i will find y'all" and read his own story with Madeline in "Because you lot are Mine".
Listen to me carefully, Wilhemina. Your mistakes, your past, your fears…none of it will change how I feel about you."
She swallowed difficult, trying to absorb the statement. "I-I don't like that proper name," she faltered.
"I know," he said gently. "Because information technology reminds you of when yous were a girl. Wilhemina is frightened and eager, wanting to be loved. And Lily is strong and brave, and would tell the world to go to hell if she wanted to."
"Which exercise you lot prefer?" she whispered.
He nudged her chin upwardly, staring into he optics. He smiled slightly. "All of you. Every function of you."

The positives:
The barrack between the chief characters.
The fact that they pretty much hate each other guts on sight, and for quite some fourth dimension (yes, I cull to place this amongst the positives, lol)
The fact that neither of them is your typical a hundred per cent leading character stereotype.
The negatives
We have a character whose family has placed her aside, and suddenly there she is..and in that location they are...in another person's house all together, and "fiddle dee dee" everything is fine.
The style Lily addresses a friend of her, a male friend of her, in the presence of her parents and anybody else who would like to hear her: Zach this, Zach that...
I am not ordinarily a snob of this blazon of affair, but the affair just felt too modern and irritating.
The predominance of accents in this story: I pretty much detest this type of thing. This is a pet peeve of mine, I confess.
I understand if we are given a little to demonstrate the character's talking patterns, only too much of information technology?
Information technology blocks the fluidity of the writing.
The fact that the principal character Alex entertains the thought of invading a adult female'southward bedroom and forcing herself to her...information technology'due south only an idea, but the condescending way he reasons with himself that they shall be married in a couple of weeks, and okay, she'll cry just they're engaged...left me less than pleased with him.
The mode Alex deals with Lily's fears of intimacy, which is pretty much doing as it pleases him, and of grade she ends up enjoying it _of form _ so, who cares?
The manner friendship is dealt in this book: Derek is the nigh pathetic alibi of a friend I've ever read about. o_O
The scene in which Lily loses a wager to Alex, in Derek's club and the way everyone deals with information technology, was extremely blench-worthy and less than romantic.
The fact that the characters insist on non making use of their tongs, for things known equally, speaking to one another!
Hey, manifestly I disliked it more than I had realized!

What a bloody fool I'd been. Of course, it was vivid. Alex was astonishing, sexy, bossy and sugariness. I loved him...and Lily was ok too...for a heroine.
The storyline was captivating, the characters interesting and the sexy times steamy. Everything I promise for in my favourite historical romance reads.
Honestly, Rosalyn Landor is one of the best narrators I've listened to. Her accents are spot on, and she does a very believable male voice. I could always tell when a character changed.
Loved listening to Then Came You and promise to listen to more than Lisa Kleypas in the hereafter.

What a page turner this turned out to be! It was most incommunicable to put down. He just tin't stand the "screw you lot", devil-may-care attitude of Lily Lawson and does everything he can to get one up on her, but this footling hellcat gets the better of him nigh every single fourth dimension. She is wickedly devious and underhanded which gets his goat beautifully until one concluding move on his part has them both in a very compromising position that will leaving you gasping more than one time ;D Lily is i of the best independent minded heroine's I call up I've ever read. She does what she wants, when she wants and how she wants and if someone doesn't similar it it doesn't phase her in the to the lowest degree. She hunts, rides, gambles and swears like a sailor without flinching and everyone loves her for it.
This is much hotter steam than your typical regency fare. The fighting, sniping and one-upmanship just adds more fuel to the burn down of sexual tension that simmers throughout the book only to explode similar yous've rarely seen an explosion go. The secondary characters and stories, especially Derek Craven's, are excellent. Your heart but breaks for him.
This is a must-read for anyone who likes a my-way-or-the-highway protective alpha who gets his comeuppance in spades from a heroine who can requite as good, if non better, as she gets :D

Updated Review:The heroine of Lisa Kleypas' And then Came You was, at the time of the book's initial release, a unique female protagonist. Today, Romancelandia is replete with hoydenish, single non-virgins who pollex their nose at society's rules. Back in 1993, the wild Lily Lawson was, for the almost part, unusual for a historical romance heroine.
The novel begins with Lily aboard a fancy bounding main vessel for a daytime consequence that bores her senseless. She allows her hat to fly off into the waters of the Thames in an endeavour to prod her male admirers into fetching it for her. The reserved Lord Alex Raiford looks on, disgusted by her antics.
Lily is on the fringes of polite guild as she is estranged from her family for her shocking beliefs. Many years ago, she was involved in a dearest affair with an Italian gentleman who turned out to be a cad. Now, she takes pleasure in flouting the ton's convetions. Upon hearing that her dear sis cannot marry the man she loves, "Lawless" Lily Lawson–as she is called–is adamant to suspension her sister's appointment with the stuffed-shirt Lord Raiford. She will use all her wills and wiles to end him from marrying her.
When Lily does succeed, Alex vows revenge and in scene afterward memorable scene, his vengeance turns to passion. (I admit to fanning myself to Alex's reaction when Lily is painted with a ophidian on her flesh!) Then passion yields to honey when he realizes that Lily's outward behavior is just a cover for the dark secrets that torment her.
Lord Raiford is a responsible man. He has a trivial brother to intendance for and estates to run. He was looking for a responsible helpmate to circular out his life.
Alex'due south first fiancee died in a horseback riding blow, so Alex is hesitant to get close to anyone, peculiarly a woman of such free spirit. If yous know me and my reviews, you know where I stand up on that trope, but hither it's no ghost who's part of the disharmonize.
Lily has gained even more notoriety as the simply female immune to gamble in a gaming hell, namely that of Derek Craven's. Here, Lily shares a chip of chemical science with the sexy, snaggle-toothed proprietor. Many Kleypas fans prefer Derek, the hero of this volume's sequel, Dreaming of Y'all every bit their favorite Kleypas MC, or even Sebastian from The Devil in Wintertime (I haven't read that one yet). As for me, I thought Alex Raiford was the better man, although I adore the scene where Alex confronts Craven about being Lily'southward lover.
There are more obstacles to Lily and Alex being together than their stubbornness and being polar opposites. But Alex's dearest volition make Lily'south incommunicable dreams come truthful. I can't help but gush over a hero like Alex: principled, maybe a little uptight, beautiful, and good with kids!
What to say near this book? Lisa Kleypas proved herself to me equally 1 of the new era of Historical Romance'due south best writers! There's and so much to appreciate hither: a stiff, unconventional heroine; an honorable hero I adore; and wonderfully plotted romance. This is one of my all-time top favorites!

five+ stars – Historical/Regency Romance
Although I'd previously read and loooved Kleypas's Travis's series, this was the starting time historical romance of hers that I read, and it's no wonder that she's such an incredibly popular romance author. The relationship between wild spitfire spinster Lily Lawson and stodgy Alex, Lord Raiford, from bitter animosity to explosive passion that turns to cordial respect and then deep affection, is sheer magic to behold. This book inflamed my LK admiration that commencement began with my love for Sugar Daddy and then connected with my utter enjoyment of the entire Travis's series, Dreaming of You, Again the Magic, and well-nigh recently with the Wallflowers series. I look forward to more wonderful books by this remarkably gifted author!

Lily Lawson is incredibly compelling as a heroine mainly considering she'south reckless most to the signal of suicidal. From the first page, her antics are riveting and tragic at the same time. She's charming and witty in society and a draw for any social event seeking an invitee with a flair for dramatics. Lily is also though heart-breakingly vulnerable and tragic, and Kleypas does such a fine job of demonstrating her bravado and insecurities simultaneously in every early on scene where we try to understand what makes her tick. We find out in due course that she's grieving the kidnapping of her young daughter but cannot reveal to society the fact that she even has an illegitimate girl. Alex, the seemingly stuffed-shirt hero, works well equally a counterpart to Lily. We see her so often through his optics as he is both repelled and fascinated by her, and eventually madly in love with someone who challenges him on many levels. I felt sympathy for Alex equally he finds the love of his life and holds on every bit tight every bit possible to keep her. Lily feels so combustible that I would flee a person similar that in my own life. Alex doesn't though, and his willingness to stick with Lily despite undesirable turmoil, lies, darkness, and despair pays off hugely in the end.
1 thing that I actually like best in this book is how much detail Kleypas puts into each run into between Lily and Alex equally they slowly work their way toward compassion and agreement and honey. The book is leisurely in developing the plot and the characters feel fully dimensional as a effect. When I call back of Kleypas's writing today, information technology feels shallow and rushed. I don't call back of her as an author I always read because of her grasp of history, but she was an author who brought characters to life. Glad I reread this one.

"She" is an early-bird version of what I have come to hate, peculiarly in historical romance: a forcedly "stiff(willed), kick-ass" female atomic number 82, to the point of being entirely unbelievable, and to me also really unlikeable. Yes, there were women who rode, and rode astride, even in the Regency era. Yes, there were women who maintained their own domain, were wealthy, gambled and were outside of societal norms. But even these women were non every bit obnoxious and blatantly mod every bit this here heroine.
"He" is the classic brooding, hurt past past tragedies Hero, with an alpha-arsehole-ish behaviour more in line with stupidity than what I would like to see in a hero to root for. No Mr. Darcy this, just a plain idiot incapable of behaving himself.
The era, which ought to take been part of the book, for why else read a historical romance, was not fifty-fifty barely there. You tin can mention dates and let drop names like mad, if you don't write within an era you don't transmit it to the reader.

Desperation makes you lot practice stupid things. However, I also wanted her to make smart choices, if she actually wanted to find her kid, and if she really wanted to be happy. Information technology was just…complicated. There were a lot of drama & angst in the 2nd of the book – and I'm not a fan of the extended secrecy trope.
This is my 13th Lisa Kleypas book, and I have to say that this is definitely in the bottom iii somewhere. I'm giving information technology ii.5 stars. It was sweet and emotional at times, but I didn't really similar how some things turned out.
Things that you might want to know (WARNING: Spoilers beneath)Is there a happy/satisfying ending? (view spoiler)[Yep, and a heartwarming epilogue. (hide spoiler)]
Love triangle? Cheating? Angst level? (view spoiler)[Not really a dearest triangle, but the guy was engaged to her sister in the first (they weren't in beloved or annihilation though). And the heroine has a proficient friend who possibly loves her, but it's not really interfering with the main romance. Medium-high angst. (hide spoiler)]
Tears-worthy? (view spoiler)[Yep, some emotional shit. (hibernate spoiler)]
Sense of humor? (view spoiler)[Some funny bits, considering the heroine and hero have a love-hate relationship. (hide spoiler)]
What age level would be appropriate? (view spoiler)[Mature audition. Explicit details on sex. Prostitution, rough language, kidnap, references/possible attempt of rape. Etc. (hide spoiler)]

I'm gear up for a bucket of cheesiness and comfort.
